Step-by-step plan to success
Through good planning and an excellent support setup, you will achieve your goals. Don’t jump into the wrong thing only to quit after 2 months — spend more time planning so you don’t U-turn.The 5 steps
- Choose
- Plan
- Meta-Plan
- Set Up
- Begin
Choose
Spend a few hours (or days) on deep life reflection to set up the rest of your life!- Message me for some incredible, free frameworks
- Book a Coaching call with Simmo
- Job satisfaction metrics
- Impact metrics
- Your comparative advantage in the role
- Your personal fit for it
- What are the subcomponents you want from your job?
- Is it possible that you can get some from work and some from other parts of life? If so, what other options does that create?
Plan
Set a target first point of success (e.g. $x/month, a job do X with Z company) Make step-by-step design to get there- Start with the end goal and work backwards
- As you get closer to now, you can become more detailed
- Free online project management apps like Asana can be great, but DO NOT get stuck in planning as an excuse to not take action!
Meta-plan
Design how to stick to the plan using some frameworks James Clear’s Atomic Habits- Optimize the cue, craving, response, and reward
- Consciously design your phone and tech use
- How much time are you spending on your phone, which you’d rather spend on building and living an awesome life?
- Experiment with different approaches
1. Have clear goals
2. Identify and don’t tolerate problems
3. Accurately diagnose your problems (root cause)
4. Design a plan of specific tasks to get around your problems
5. Do the tasks (implement the plan)
Murphyjitsu- Murphy’s Law — “whatever can go wrong, will go wrong”
- Imagine the future plan has failed. Why did it fail?
- Design a solution to that problem
- Imagine again. If there’s another point of failure, design a solution.
- Repeat and repeat until you feel confident you’ve designed solutions to all possible problems
- Find a “buddy” to call for an hour or so each month. Check each other’s plans, give each other feedback. If you don’t have a friend for it, find one online
- Find a group online for daily accountability check-ins. Set main goals. Report on the previous day.
- Cowork (either online or in person)
- Create a vision board
- Gamify — Track daily metrics (target max days in a row)
- Get yourself small and big rewards for task completion or “punishments” if that works better for you. Or a combo of both.
- Beeminder works well if you prefer the stick to the carrot
Set Up
Tracking doc (paper and digital) Deadlines Daily-, weekly-, monthly self-review-
- Redesign plan only when necessary, but be open to it
Begin!
This is it. You put in the foundations. Now it’s time: take the first step. Optimize for the start line: the tiniest action. From there you’ll inevitably start rolling Each day- Before bed, make a rough plan for the next day
- Know what the most important thing to work on is. Do that before you do anything else.
